Marco Polo Project

Barry Ogden with Thomas Gallant and his son Phil in front of the Marco Polo Replica

Original Diver finds his way to our Replica 50 years later

We recently got a call from Thomas Gallant of Stanley Bridge PEI. In 1959 he was the fishermen [he also dives] who found the Marco Polo at Cavendish Beach [300 feet out 120 feet down ] [it was salvaged in 1883] . He brought up the anchors and other things. He and his son Phil wanted to see our replica [50 years later]. I spent Saturday morning with them. Thomas's father Henry played with Lucy Maud Montgomery , when they were both 8 years old they went down to the beach to see the Marco Polo come ashore [Lucy wrote her first story when she was 17 The Wreck of the Marco Polo and won some prizes [its on our web site , along with the archalogical site map of the wreck]. Henry played with Lucy and Thomas and later worked on the MacNeil farm where Lucy lived . Thomas is 86 years old.

Thomas stands beside a model of the Marco Polo at the NB Museum.

We hope Thomas, phil & Ian enjoyed their day with us, it was sure great having them drop by!
