Marco Polo Project
Original Diver finds his way to our Replica 50 years later We recently got a call from Thomas Gallant of Stanley Bridge PEI. In 1959 he was the fishermen [he also dives] who found the Marco Polo at Cavendish Beach [300 feet out 120 feet down ] [it was salvaged in 1883] . He brought up the anchors and other things. He and his son Phil wanted to see our replica [50 years later]. I spent Saturday morning with them. Thomas's father Henry played with Lucy Maud Montgomery , when they were both 8 years old they went down to the beach to see the Marco Polo come ashore [Lucy wrote her first story when she was 17 The Wreck of the Marco Polo and won some prizes [its on our web site , along with the archalogical site map of the wreck]. Henry played with Lucy and Thomas and later worked on the MacNeil farm where Lucy lived . Thomas is 86 years old.
