Auditions for Marco Polo: The
Musical

The Saint John
Theatre Company, in partnership with the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra,
presents the world premiere of Marco Polo: The Musical' on a gala concert-style
production at Harbour Station in October. They will also have the Saint John
High School Concert Choir on board as a background chorus. Auditions for the
production are today and Sunday, 1 p.m., at the Saint John Theatre Company
building, 112 Princess St. No preparation is necessary, materials will be
provided. Singing and acting auditions only. Call backs will be included in a
script development workshop happening on July 17-18. Casting requirements,
approximately 35-40 costumed roles are available: - A young girl who sees
the wreck of the Marco Polo in P.E.I. - Old Salt: A grandfather who once
was involved with the building of the ship in his younger days. He is the main
narrator of the story. - Donnelly: The Old Salt as a younger man. This is a
major acting role with some songs. - Mary: A young woman from Saint John
who travels on the Marco Polo from Liverpool to Melbourne. A major role with
songs. - Janet: Another young woman who takes the journey to Melbourne. -
Physician/surgeon: The ship's doctor. - Bully Forbes: The ship's captain.
- Two to four children - The chorus (approx. 12). - Many smaller
characters and costumed chorus roles available, as well.
The production will also require major crew support in
terms of costume and props development. The commitment will be quite heavy
during late-September and during the month of October. Rehearsals to begin in
late August. Some rehearsals may require day trips to Moncton to work with the
orchestra.
